If your wallet has turned into a brick of receipts and old loyalty cards, a slim wallet is tempting. Minimalist wallets – especially metal ones with an elastic or spring mechanism – have become hugely popular. But are they right for you?
The case for a slim wallet
- Front-pocket friendly. A slim wallet fits comfortably in a front pocket, which is more comfortable when sitting and harder for pickpockets to reach.
- Forces you to declutter. With limited space, you carry only what you use.
- Durability. Aluminium, titanium or carbon fibre wallets do not wear out at the folds like leather can.
- RFID blocking. Many metal wallets are designed to block RFID scanning of contactless cards.
The downsides
- Limited capacity. Most hold somewhere around a dozen cards. If you carry many cards, it will not fit.
- Cash is awkward. Notes usually go under a clip or strap on the outside.
- Learning curve. Pushing cards out with your thumb takes a little practice.
- Price. Premium materials cost more than a basic leather bifold.
How to choose
- Count your cards. Lay out everything you actually use in a month. That number is your minimum capacity.
- Decide on cash. Rarely carry cash? A money clip is fine. Carry it daily? Look for a strap or a slim bifold instead.
- Pick a material. Aluminium is light and affordable; titanium is stronger and lighter still; carbon fibre looks sharp and is very light.
- Check the warranty. Good slim wallets often come with long warranties, which tells you how confident the maker is.
Our verdict
If you carry fewer than 12 cards and little cash, a slim wallet is one of the most satisfying everyday upgrades you can make. If you need lots of cards, receipts and cash, stick with a traditional wallet.
