If you camp off-grid, run a trolling motor or power a van build, your battery bank decides how long you can stay out. Many owners are replacing traditional lead-acid batteries with lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). Here is how the two compare.
Usable capacity
This is the biggest difference. Lead-acid batteries should generally not be drained much below half their capacity if you want them to last. LiFePO4 batteries can typically use most of their rated capacity. In practice, a lithium battery can deliver noticeably more usable energy than a lead-acid battery with the same amp-hour rating.
Weight and size
LiFePO4 batteries are much lighter for the energy they store – often less than half the weight of an equivalent lead-acid bank. On a boat or in a van, that saving matters for handling, fuel use and payload.
Lifespan
Lead-acid batteries are usually rated for a few hundred deep cycles. LiFePO4 batteries are commonly rated for thousands of cycles. Even though lithium costs more at the start, the cost per cycle over its life is often lower.
Voltage under load
Lithium batteries hold a steadier voltage as they discharge, so lights stay bright and inverters run properly until the battery is nearly empty. Lead-acid voltage sags as it drains.
Maintenance
Flooded lead-acid batteries need their water topped up and should be charged fully to avoid sulfation. LiFePO4 batteries need no watering and do not mind sitting partially charged.
Upfront cost
Lead-acid wins on sticker price. If you only use your RV or boat a few weekends a year and your current setup works, it may still be the sensible choice.
What you may need to upgrade when switching
- Charger and converter – check they have a lithium (LiFePO4) charging profile.
- Alternator charging – a DC-DC charger is often recommended to protect your vehicle's alternator.
- Solar controller – make sure it supports lithium settings.
- Cold weather – most lithium batteries should not be charged below freezing unless they have built-in low-temperature protection or heating.

If you use your setup often, go off-grid, or care about weight, LiFePO4 is usually worth it. If you use it rarely and on a tight budget, lead-acid still does the job.
