You spend roughly a third of your life in the bedroom, yet it is often the last room we put effort into. The good news: you do not need a full makeover to sleep better. A few well-chosen essentials can make the room calmer, darker and more comfortable.
1. Control the light
Light is one of the strongest signals your body uses to decide when to feel sleepy. Blackout curtains or blinds help if streetlights or early sunrise wake you up. Inside the room, swap bright overhead lights for warm, dimmable lamps in the evening, and keep screens out of bed where you can.
2. Keep it cool
Most people sleep better in a slightly cool room. Breathable bedding matters just as much as the thermostat: natural fibres and moisture-wicking fabrics help you avoid waking up hot. If you tend to overheat, layer lighter blankets instead of one heavy duvet so you can adjust through the night.
3. Reduce noise
A fan, a white noise machine or simple earplugs can mask traffic, neighbours or a snoring partner. Soft furnishings – rugs, curtains, upholstered headboards – also absorb sound and make a room feel quieter.
4. Choose the right pillow
A pillow that is too high or too flat can leave you with a stiff neck. As a rough guide:
- Side sleepers usually need a firmer, higher pillow to fill the gap between shoulder and head.
- Back sleepers tend to do best with a medium height that supports the curve of the neck.
- Stomach sleepers generally prefer a thin, soft pillow – or none at all.
Adjustable or shredded-fill pillows are a practical option if you are not sure, because you can add or remove fill until it feels right.
5. Invest in the layer you touch
Sheets, pillowcases and sleepwear are in contact with your skin all night. Look for soft, breathable materials and a comfortable fit rather than chasing the highest thread count. Sleepwear should be loose enough that you never notice it.
6. Build a simple wind-down routine
- Go to bed and get up at roughly the same time, even on weekends.
- Dim the lights an hour before bed.
- Keep a book by the bed instead of your phone.
- Make the bed each morning – coming back to a tidy bed is more inviting than you think.
